There are territorial claims by Australia, France, New Lealand and Norway, and overlapping claims in the Antarctic Peninsula by Argentina, Chile and the UK. Other states do not recognize these claims. Ofmain concemn is the adoption of a protocolto ban mining. Most member states have agreedto this. Further protection ofthe environment is proposed by monitoring all scientitic activities, and prosecuting any country whose research wouldleadto detrimental global change.
